-In a humid and warm place, I existed.
The whitewashed "gender selection" takes place in two different spaces, where satisfaction and despair mingle.

It is my second independent film in East China Normal University.

I struggled with this film in my junior year in lockdown in Shanghai. Because of the materials shortage and outdoor limits, I was forced to make sand animation in my dormitory.

Growing up in a traditional Chinese household, the pervasive impact of societal norms regarding gender roles has significantly shaped my experiences. I have keenly observed the inhibiting effects of both the one-child policy and the entrenched preference for sons, preventing girls from taking charge of their lives and, distressingly, sometimes resulting in abandonment or even more tragic outcomes.

Fortunate to be the only child in a supportive family, I am acutely aware that not all girls share my circumstances. Many face abandonment simply because they are girls. Delving into the historical documentation of these unjust and inhumane practices, I discovered that sand animation provides the ideal medium for me to convey the oppressive, enigmatic atmosphere that underscores these narratives.

Through this film, I aim to cast a poignant spotlight on the challenges confronted by girls who, unlike myself, lack the privilege of escaping the harsh realities imposed by a society grappling with biased gender norms.
